Who's Ready For Opening Day- NRA Blog

By: Victoria L Walker

Spring hunting is on the horizon and hunters everywhere are busy making preparations before opening day. From gathering gear to being with family or friends, each hunter has something they look forward to when a season comes around. We reached out to some of our friends and asked what they’re doing to get ready for the big day!

Kristy Titus

I really enjoy sharing my love of the outdoors with others and its become my annual tradition to do just that during the youth turkey season.

Getting kids excited about hunting requires nothing but investing time with them. First and foremost, I make sure they are safe and that they have a positive experience throughout the day.

Before heading out into the field, I spend time going over gun safety, get them use to the shotgun, and have them practice on turkey shaped targets. It’s not only a fun way to learn the patterning process but also helps build confidence.

Kids have a short attention span so I like to keep them involved in every aspect of the hunt. From helping with preparations to setting up decoys and even practicing those turkey calls keeps them engaged.

The entire process is a learning experience. Depending on the child, it’s a great opportunity to teach dressing techniques and meal preparation if you’re fortunate to harvest a turkey that day. It’s also a time to teach how hunting is conservation.

The memories created afield will last a lifetime and beyond and I’m glad I get to be a part of that journey with others.

Kristy Titus- NRA Range Safety Officer

The National Rifle Association Range Safety Officer (RSO) program was developed in response to the demand for a nationally recognized range safety officer certification. The RSO demonstrates the knowledge, skills and attitude essential to organizing, conducting and supervising safe shooting activities and range safety operations.

In order to better serve the shooting ranges and educational firearms training events that I participate and instruct, I am proud to announce that I have completed my certification as an NRA RSO. This is in addition to my currently held NRA certifications as pistol and Refuse To Be A Victim instructor.

The RSO certification expands my role and responsibility at the range to include range inspections, range rules, firearm stoppages and malfunctions, range safety briefings which include procedures to follow in the event of an emergency.

It is because of the NRA, through philanthropic leadership that the participation of women in shooting sports is on the rise. Together we are educating women on firearms familiarization, and safe responsible gun ownership. The natural progression for many is hunting- and there is no better place to spend time with friends and family than afield creating memories that last a lifetime.”

Hypocrisy- Chris Cox NRA

The Hollywood celebrities, political elites and billionaires who attack the Second Amendment want to take our God-given freedom away. Yet at the core of the Second Amendment is the eternal truth that no life is more worthy of armed protection than another. The National Rifle Association fights for the protection of these liberties. The NRA is Freedom's Safest Place.
