Tech Tuesday- Hog Saddle

Rifle season has arrived and while afield, terrain features and vegetation can make taking shots from the prone impossible. There are many options that are available today that help us as hunters and marksmen get off the ground and over top of vegetation in order to take shots in any condition.

Shooting sticks or a tripod rest equate to additional gear that one has to carry, so when making the basis of selection it is best to first make that consideration with the application in mind.

If you are afield doing some glassing and spotting with your spotting scope, you can now make use of your tripod to also create a shooting rest. Coupling a high quality tripod and HOG Saddle offers any rifle and shooter unparalleled, steady support in any condition.

The HOG Saddle is a universal rifle rest that literally locks your rifle into position, offering a stable shooting platform. When taking inexperienced or young hunters afield, I really appreciate the stability that the HOG Saddle affords. The Marine Corps actually considers the HOG Saddle to be a safety device because it maintains control of the loaded firearm.

The HOG Saddle is also designed to absorb and dampen the recoil from your hunting rifle. This will allow you as the shooter to stay on target and place a follow up shot if needed. Turkey hunters take note, simply set your rifle into position over your decoys and you are hands free to run your box calls minimizing movement while maintaining your shooting position.

Simply mount the HOG or PIG saddle to your tripod head or directly to the base of the tripod without using a head. You can attach your tripod's quick release plate to the bottom of the HOG Saddle for easy on and off.

The HOG Saddle was designed by a Marine Scout Sniper and OIF Veteran with the special operations and law enforcement community in mind, however, I have found the HOG Saddle to be extremely valuable afield. The design is based around four basic principals:

Ruggedness- Impact and corrosion resistant

Portability- Less than 16 ounces

Versitility- Universal compatibility to any tripod platform using 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 thread attachments

American Made- Made in the USA. Period.

There are two versions to select from, the MOD7 HOG Saddle which retails at $309.00 and the PIG Saddle retailing at $135.00. Go to www.hogsaddle.com to learn more.

Tech Tuesday- Truck Vault

The road to hunting camp can be a long one, often I find myself on the road for days before arriving at my final destination. Loading and offloading gear in and out of my truck and into my hotel room can be a huge hassle, especially after a long day. Leaving firearms and expensive optics in the truck overnight has not been an option, until now. Let me introduce you to my new favorite piece of custom security gear, the Truck Vault.

100% Made in the USA, Truck Vault, offers a huge variety of secure, in-vehicle secure storage options for trucks with or without a canopy. You want options, Truck Vault has lots of them to fit your needs. For the sake of my crazy outdoor lifestyle, I opted with the all-weather extreme series so that my gear would be safe, secure and weather protected even if I chose to remove the canopy from my truck.

Not only are my valuables protected from inclement weather and theft, I can keep them organized with drawer dividers and compartments that are secured with heavy duty locks. If you are worried about overloading the top of your vault, don’t worry, you can carry up to 2,000 pounds on top of the vault, with their Extreme All-Weather series that you can also add tie down rails to the unit to help secure big loads. The drawers will easily support your gear and will support more weight than you can comfortably pull out. The standard drawer height will afford plenty of room for most shotguns to be stored and the magnum size will allow scoped rifles to be stored with ease without having to lay them on their side.

With each TruckVault being custom made to order, you can ensure that you are getting the perfect vault for your needs and your truck make and model. You can even add power outlets for a working office area, there are tons of options from drawer configuration, drawer divider options, custom carpet selection, cargo lights, tie down rails, table extensions, drawer foam, and drawer face selection options and more. With hunters needs in mind, check out the series designed to fit your application; Bow Hunting, Duck Hunting, Upland Bird, Trap Shooting, Camping, and more.

Tech Tuesday- Rifle Gear Disaster Prevention

The animal of your dreams is in your crosshairs, one press of the trigger and all of your dreams will come true. That holds true given that all of your equipment is functioning properly together. Before heading out into the field this rifle season, here are a few simple items to double check on your weapon system and to bring afield to ensure downrange accuracy and consistency.

Here are a few items to double check before your next rifle hunt:

Double checking that your rifle does not have any loose fasteners or cracks in the construction of the stock. It is especially important to torque your action screws.

Use a dollar bill to ensure that your barrel is free floated.

Make sure that your rifle sling stud is properly attached to the stock. The last thing you want is to drop your rifle causing damage due to a faulty sling stud.

In the field or on hand nearby be sure to bring along for field expedient repairs:

A supportive gun case is a must for transit of your rifle. This holds especially true when transporting your rifle to and from hunting areas on bumpy roads where your rifle scope zero is easily knocked off. Check out some great options from Cabela's here...

The Borka Tool Expanded Field Kit contains everything you need afield. The torque wrench can be custom calibrated for your action or scope rings/bases.

Wheeler also makes a Torque Fat Wrench to achieve and manintain factory torque settings.

And don’t forget to ring along your manufacture recommendations for torque specs on action screws, scope rings and bases.

Wheeler Pro Reticle Scope Level System- will ensure that if you need to mount an optic afield, it is installed correctly.

Compact cleaning rod and cotton patches to remove moisture from rifle barrel. Check out the Herter's All-In-One Kit that covers most rifles, pistols and shotguns.

JB weld is great to bring along in the event that your rifle sling stud comes loose.

Tech Tuesday- Cabela's XPG Outkross Hybrid Jacket

Light-weight performance clothing is on every backcountry hunters wish list and Cabela’s is working hard to bring consumers the best in light weight, performance apparel. Switching gears from hiking to glassing can bring a quick chill to the bone. To offset that chill, many hunters have invested in the “poofy coat” for light weight, warm outerwear.

The Cabela’s XPG Outkross Hybrid Jacket is not from the OutfitHer line, however, I believe that it is a worthwhile addition to your hunting wardrobe. First and foremost, the jacket is extremely light weight and warm with 60 grams of PrimaLoft insulation. PrimaLoft is a favorite of mine as it is warm, even if it gets damp. There are built in hand warmer pockets so you can add chemical heat packs that will keep you even warmer without additional bulk.

The outer shell kept me dry in light rain this archery season with the jacket having a durable water repellant finish (DWR).

And finally, the reason I really like this jacket is because it is super light-weight and it compresses down taking up very little space in your backpack when you are trekking.

Because this jacket is from the XPG line, you will not find it in camo, however, I purchased the jacket in gargoyle gray and found it to be plenty neutral for hunting applications, even during close encounters with archery elk. Having my backpack on added extra camo and if you feel like you need more camo or you want to add a warming layer, simply add the OutfitHer PrimaLoft vest.

Check out the Cabela’s XPG Outkross Hybrid jacket on cabelas.com item IK-974368. Right now, it’s on sale for $119.99 with free shipping.
